Weekly Thoughts

2 Tim 4:2 preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

As we strive to live by the word our God has given us, his comfort, instruction, exhortation and correction, it is imperative to examine his words and apply them to our lives day by day.

This section is dedicated to brief thoughts centered around scripture as God word applies to us today.   Read and enjoy at your leisure.

I Love Him!

I overheard a conversation between two teenagers talking about God.  One asked, "You mean to tell me that you actually go to church three times a week?  Why?"  The other young lady said, "Because we really and truly love the lord and want to be together as often as possible."  1 John 4:10-11 "this is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another."
That's it; we love the Lord because we live our lives knowing how much He loves us. Those that truly love God will live their lives doing their best to not disappoint Him.  The next time any of us says that they love God let's always remember what Jesus said, "If you love me, you will obey what I command."  (John 14:15)

Preach the Word

Paul writes to Timothy, a young preacher according to 1 Timothy 4:12, and tells him to preach the word.  The word for preach in the Greek is "KARUX" which means to announce the king is either here or coming.  The apostle was instilling within Timothy to be an example in his speech, life, love, faith and purity.  What a challenge!  Paul also told Timothy to watch his life and doctrine closely.  (1 Timothy 4:16)  This meant that Timothy would not be able to separate his life and doctrine.  We simply are what we live and all the rest is just religious talk.
Preaching the word will have its greatest affect to change lives for the better when it is not just spoken but also lived for others to see.  2 Corinthians 3:2.  "Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction."

The Bride of Christ

So no one would misunderstand about the relationship between Jesus and the Church the inspired writers, directed by the Holy Spirit, referred to it as husband and wife.  Jesus being the husband and the church the bride.  "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united tohis wife, and the two will become one flesh.  This is a profound mystery but I am talking about Christ and the church."  Ephesians 5:31-32
This is exactly the reason many speak of spiritual adultery.  Even though that term is not found in the Bible the priciple is there.  Christians are to be faithful to their husband., Jesus.  As one man said at our weekly prayer breakfast, "This means we don't have the right to be flirtatious or wink at the neighbors wife."  His comments were meant toward knowing the truth about Christ and not going down the wrong path.

The Decisions We Make

True is the statement that life does involve itself with a series of choices and decisions that must be made.  Paramount in all our choices is the decision to be a Christian.  There is no greater life.  John 10:10.  There is no greater reward.  Revelation 21.  god's promises can be trusted.  Titus 1:2.  Yet, there are many who fail to make that choice.  Some out of laziness, others out of unbelief.  As one man told me, "I gave Satan 40 years of my life and I knew if I continued with Him the retirement play would be the worst in history."  We don't decide to follow God just because of what we get.  We follow Him also knowing what we have to give.  Joel 3:14.  Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision.  For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision."

The Unknown God

About 600 years before Christ came to earth there was a plague that hit Athens, Greece and the surrounding area.  Thousands lost their lives.  The Athenians bowed to their god to no avail.  They had foreign gods shipped in but still people kept dying.  Finally, they asked the advice of Epimenedes and he told them that there was indeed another God that they hadn't bowed before.  So, they built an altar to an unknown God and sacrificed both black and white sheep.  The plague was stopped.
This was the point that Paul was making in Acts 17 on Mars hill.  We have a plague among us too.  It is called sin.  It is the one and only God that can and will remove the stain of sin that comes with this plague.  To the world God may be "Unknown" but Christians know Him very well.  Let's introduce the world to who God really is, amen.  In fact, In our nation it's not so much the fact that God is unknown as it is that by far too many He is simply unwanted.  For them the plague continues.

Asaph's Dilemma

Asaph was a great worshipper of God.  At least he was until he got sick.  Then he writes: (Psalms 73:3-4 NIV) "For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. {4} They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong."  Not unlike Asaph, many envy what others have thinking material things make a person somehow better.  There isn't anything wrong with material things unless they get in the way of Godliness.  Paul must have struggled with this same thing.  (Philippians 4:11 NIV) "I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances."  Paul was saying he had to learn that contentment will be attacked by the prosperity of others.  We must always keep in mind that when one has Christ they have the greatest of all gifts.

The Hope That Is In Us

Hope.  What a wonderful word when understood biblically.  It is not the crossed finger for luck with half hearted anticipation of what you wish might happen.  It is the convicted through the word of God faith knows God cannot lie.  Titus 1:2.  It is the hope we are to express to those who ask about our living for Jesus.  (1 Peter 3:15 NIV) "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,"  Wouldn't it be a fearful thing to face this world without hope?

Stop Complaining!

Most, if not all, parents have said to their children, "Stop complaining."  Now, we all know that those two words are not just to be used on the young and impressionable but also for the older, and often, not too much wiser.  One would think that Christians would have solved the problem of being whiners and complainers.  Yet all too often even a child of God can be blinded by the worlds bright temptation lights.  With heaven as our eternal promised home what do we have to complain about?  (Philippians 2:14 NIV) "Do everything without complaining or arguing,"

Family Time

1 Timothy 5:8 is much more than Fathers just providing the physical needs in life.  Providing for family also involves the emotional, spiritual and intellectual aspects of life.  Spending time together with your family, both quantity and quality, is probably the biggest challenge facing families today.  In her book, "Traits of a Healthy Family," Dolores Curran stated that the lack of time may be the most pervasive enemy of the healthy family.  Strong, healthy, happy Christian families make the time to spend together.  Are you too busy?

Living Above the Snake Line

I don't like snakes.  One person, knowing my phobia, told me I should consider living above the snake line.  This is that place in the mountains where snakes won't go because of the temperature.  God asks us to live above the snake line too.  Satan is depicted in Genesis 3 as a serpent who is intent on deception.  This thought is carried over in the New Testament with such passages as 2 Corinthians 4:4 where Satan is the god of this age.  Again in 2 Corinthians 11:13-14 Satan can appear as an angel of light.  Add to this that he is the father of lies, John 8:44, and on the prowl as a lion seeking someone to devour, 1 Peter 5:8, and you can see why we are to live above the snake line today.  God wants us to don our spiritual attire and climb the mountain to safety and not to stay at the base camp where things only seem to be better.  Satan wants us to fear the climb up t! he mountain.  Don't give him the victory, climb friends, climb.

I Am Not Worthy!

Sunday one of our members handed me an article about a person who felt like a speck of dust in the universe and so insignificant to the overall scheme of things.  As a result of this thinking he felt unworthy of the blessings he received daily.  We are all unworthy.  The death of God's Son on the cross shouts to all of us that regardless of how worthless we may sometimes feel we are priceless in the eyes of the heavenly Father.
(Romans 6:23 NIV) "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."  Now, that is real love.

The Breath of God

When God first made man He breathed into his nostrils and he became a living being. When we have been made alive spiritually it is because God breathed life into His word.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV) "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, {17} so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." The word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword. Hebrews 4:12. The apostle Peter tells us how we are born again. (1 Peter 1:23 NIV) "For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God." We are born again through the word. The word is alive. The word is inspired. Inspired comes from a word that means "God Breathed." We are alive both physically and spiritually because of the breath of God.

The Lord Guides Our Steps

It was Jeremiah who told us that mankind needed direction. (Jeremiah 10:23 NIV) "I know, O LORD, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps." What a powerful verse this is. Think about it, we are not alone. Not now, not ever. There is a way I can walk so I can be sure about my salvation. (1 John 1:7 NIV) "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin."
Man has tried his best to be good enough without following God's commands and failed miserably. (Proverbs 14:12 NIV) "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." All of us need direction to get to the promise land. I know of no one who wants to experience wandering in a wilderness for a day let alone forty years. Try as we may, we will never improve on the plan God already has for us. His is the only direction we need.

God's Word is a Lamp, Light and Direction

In Psalm 119 the psalmist gives three scriptures that allow us insight concerning God's word. (Psalms 119:105 NIV) "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path."(Psalms 119:130 NIV) "The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple." (Psalms 119:133 NIV) "Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me." I must remember that a lamp is only useful when turned on which is the only way to get the light for my life. The direction His word gives is to guide us away from sin. The surest way to remain in darkness without direction and neck deep in sin is to avoid God's word.

His Word Anchors Our Soul

One man said, "I wish when we became Christians we had an anchor attached to us so we would remain where God wanted us." Sounds nice but it goes against our free moral agency. We have been given the right of choice. God wants willing servants not robots. Besides, He does give us an anchor when we become Christians. It is called the Bible.
(1 Peter 1:3-5 NIV) "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, {4} and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade--kept in heaven for you, {5} who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time." Where does this say anything about an anchor? The anchor we have as Christians is the fact that God cannot lie. (Titus 1:2) That being true then all His promises will come true.
(Hebrews 6:18-19 NIV) "God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. {19} We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain," We don't have to drift on life's uncertain sea.

Will Most be Saved?

I was involved in a survey in a small town that asked only three questions. Do you attend services somewhere? Where do you attend? Will most people be lost or saved? Suprisingly, nine out of ten people polled said they thought most people were going to be saved. This contradicts what Jesus said. (Matthew 7:13-14 NIV) ""Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. {14} But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." I guess the real question then is what is meant by the word "few." I know that out of over 600,000 fighting men who left Egypt headed toward the promise land only two, Joshua and Caleb, made it. Out of the estimated 1.5 million people who lived during the time of Noah only eight were saved. I am not the greatest mathematician but ten being saved out of 2.1 million combining these two instances pretty well defines what Jesus meant by few. There is no quota for heaven that God has to fill. You are either in or out and that's it.

Does God Really Care About Us?

I cringe every time I hear someone ask that question. The reason is that inherent in the question is an admission that God is. If one believes God is and that He sent His Son to die for us then why the question in the first place. Of course God cares. We may wonder why He cares, but He does. (2 Peter 3:9 NIV) "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." The question isn't whether or not God cares for us, it is whether or not we care for Him.

It Does Get Better Than This

I watched a commercial during a football game where two men were watching their favorite teams play, drinking their favorite soft drink, munching their favorite snacks and one of them says, "It just doesn't get any better than this." Oh yes it does. This world is not the Christian's home and this is not the best we will see. Jesus said, (John 14:1-4 NIV) ""Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me. {2} In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. {3} And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. {4} You know the way to the place where I am going."" If Jesus is preparing it then I want to see it. He helped in the creation of this world and all its beauty but my limited imagination can't fathom the greatness of heaven. Someone asked, "What if when we get there it is plain looking and not what we expect?" First of all, I doubt that will be the case but I will take plain over pain any day, Amen.
