Philosophy of Youth and Family Ministry
1) Why "Youth and Family" Ministry?
- To emphasize the importance of biblically healthy families.
- To provide a place for Christian families to network with one another.
- To provide resources and encouragement for Christian parents.
- To keep from further isolating teens from their families.
2) Communication is the Key:
- A concerted effort must be made to open lines of communication
between parent and student, student and minister, parent and minister,
parent and parent.
- A calendar with youth and family activities will be provided each month
to help families plan accordingly.
- A "Family Newsletter" will be available each month to provide parents
with resources and to help remind families of upcoming youth activities.
- Phone, e-mail, and face-to-face meetings will also be frequently utilized.
3) The Role of Parents (The Secret Weapon of a Successful Program)
- Set a good example by being present at worship services consistently.
- Read the Bible, pray, and talk about spiritual things with your children.
- Emphasize the spiritual aspects of youth activities rather than the social.
- Develop boundaries concerning youth activities.
- Be personally involved with the youth and family program.
4) For the Jr. Youth Group (3rd - 6th Grade):
- Bible studies will supplement Bible classes and family studies to help
further familiarize students with the Bible and biblical principles.
- Games and social activities will build unity and friendship.
- Scheduling will consist of a Bible study every-other week and one
bigger activity once a month to help them slowly adjust to involvement
in youth activities.
- A one day out-of-town trip will be planned each summer.
5) For the Youth Group (7th - 12th)
- Bible classes, Bible studies, and devotionals will be the main priority.
These will help to constantly reinforce practical biblical principles and
help our teens maintain their focus on spiritual matters.
- Service projects will be scheduled often to help teens develop a desire
to put the needs of others above their own.
- Games, trips, and "social" activities will help maintain and build unity
and camaraderie.
- Scheduling will consist of at least one activity every week and a couple
of bigger activities throughout the month. This will allow even the
busiest teens to attend some of the activities, even if they are unable to
attend everything.
- One of the most important events throughout the year will be our annual
mission trip. This is usually a time of significant spiritual growth.
6) For Families
- Activities will be scheduled for families to spend time with each other
and other Christian families.
- During family activities students must be accompanied by a parent.
- Scheduling will consist of one family activity every month.
- We will also label one weekend a month "Family Weekend." On that
weekend no youth activities will be scheduled and parents and youth will
be encouraged to spend time together.
